Practical ways to help children be part of the grieving process when a loved one dies

Polly is preparing for a very special party. There’s a lot to do and everyone is very busy. But no one is too busy to share special memories with Polly, memories of her Grandma whom everyone loved. Polly too has made something that holds memories of Gran and, as she hugs Grandad very hard, she is ready to say goodbye in her very own way...

Meg writes...
This book started as a story which I was asked to write, exploring death and grief for children. The original idea was for a straightforward picture book but I very quickly thought it would be a bit different to include instructions for the things that Polly’s friends and relatives make. The original publisher decided it wouldn’t work for them and I put the idea on one side. Much later, I approached BRF with the idea and it expanded into the story/activity book you see now.

I really wanted to write this book because I have been to a surprising number of funerals and I think it is very sad that children are often excluded from the proceedings. I think this adds to our whole society’s fear of death. In the past, people were much more open about their grieving and, I think, faced up the whole issue much better. I hope this book will be useful to families when they are coping with a bereavement and will be great comfort.

If I could change anything in this book, I would include some details of support agencies for bereaved families.

I still really love the story and one of the poems I have written for the section on taking part in the service. It’s about a young girl I knew called Sharon who was killed in a road accident. I wanted to write something to celebrate her life and I really like the lines:

And her talk was like the fizz
In a pack of Refreshers.
The tube is empty now, but I loved the taste.
I will remember it for ever.
